Rain Water Harvesting In Bunyangabu & Kabarole by Tomira

Rainwater harvesting is the accumulating and storing, of rainwater for use. It can be used for drinking, for livestock, for irrigation, as well as other typical uses given to water. Rainwater collected from the roofs of houses, tents and local institutions can make an important contribution to the availability of drinking water.

Rainwater harvesting systems require regular maintenance and cleaning to keep the system hygienic. Tanks can be above or below ground. Factors such as soil, outside temperature ranges, and cost should be considered to determine whether a tank is placed above or below ground. Some tanks are suited for above-ground placement (i.e. vinyl-lined swimming pools), whereas others can be used both above and below ground (i.e. polyethylene). Some types of tanks are built to be buried (i.e. polyethylene tanks designed for burial).

In Tooro kingdom today, the rainfall patterns have drastically changed hence calling for harvesting most of the rain water since the water tables have also gone down and water demand is high due to population increase.

Tomira would therefore like to partner up with well-wisher’s in this affected region to create awareness on rain water harvesting systems. This will be possible by conducting some seminars to carry out some demonstration exercises in the sub counties of Bukuku in Kabarole District and Buhesi in Bunyangabu District.effetive 10/10./2011 to 31/10/2011 to be backed up by awareness campaigns in different media platforms.

Benefits to the Affected Communities
